Pre-Prep offers a longer program in the year before school, which means there will be more time for children to deepen their learning and development prior to starting school.
Pre-Prep is a play-based learning program led by qualified teachers. Like Four-Year-Old Kindergarten, Pre-Prep will follow the Victorian Early Years Learning and Development Framework. There is a staged roll out of pre-prep throughout the state. You can find out more at the Department of Education's web site.
In 2026, OCK will be delivering 22.5 hours of Pre-Prep to children who meets this eligibility criteria. Pre-Prep will start for all 4-year-olds in Glen Eira City Council in 2034.
Increased hours of learning in the year before school gives more time for children to deepen their learning and development. More hours of play-based learning in Pre-Prep can lead to:
• improved learning and social outcomes
• increased literacy and numeracy
• positive self-regulation and social skills.
From 2026, Pre-Prep will be available for:
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children
children from a refugee or asylum seeker background and
children who have had contact with Child Protection across the state.
Any child who was supported by Early Start Kindergarten or Access to Early Learning in their Three-Year-Old Kindergarten year is also eligible for Pre-Prep from 2026.
Use the Pre-Prep calculator at vic.gov.au/preprep to check if you are eligible for pre-prep.
